Assorted Wisteria - Wisteria spp.
Wisteria is the deciduous twining climber that carries pendulous racemes of pea flowers in spring, and the assorted lines cover the range of species and colour forms grown in Australia. All of them share the same fundamentals: a woody trunk that thickens like a small tree, enormous annual extension growth, and a flowering habit that depends entirely on being pruned twice a year. Chosen and trained properly, Wisteria is one of the very few climbers that can shade a pergola in summer and let winter sun through, while delivering a spectacular three week spring display.
Why Wisteria
Deciduous Shade: Dense summer cover over a pergola, then bare framework that lets winter sun into the house.
Spring Display: Hanging racemes are unmatched by any other hardy climber grown in Australian gardens.
Perfume: Most forms are fragrant, with the scent concentrated under a covered structure.
Trunk Character: Old stems twist and gnarl into a sculptural feature that reads strongly through winter.
Longevity: Correctly framed and pruned, a single plant will outlast most of the garden around it.
Toxicity warning: The seeds and pods are toxic if eaten, so site it away from play areas.
Ideal Applications
Pergola and Arbour: The traditional and still the best use, provided the frame is engineered to carry the mature weight.
Wire Trained Wall: Fanned on stainless wire it flowers hard against masonry without the depth of a free standing frame.
Weeping Standard: Staked and headed it makes a small feature tree for a lawn or courtyard.
Balustrade and Fence Line: Run horizontally, the racemes hang down over the face of the structure below.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m along a beam or wire run
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Winter and early spring, while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Deep, free draining soil of moderate fertility, neutral to slightly acidic. Rich nitrogen heavy ground produces vigorous foliage and few flowers
Establishment Care: Water deeply through the first two summers and mulch to 75mm, kept off the stem. Set the permanent framework in the first three years, prune whippy growth back to five or six buds in midsummer and to two or three buds in winter, and keep the vine away from gutters, downpipes and roof tiles because mature stems are strong enough to lift them.
