Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Foxtail Palm (Multi-Stem) - Wodyetia bifurcata
In the wild on Cape Melville in far north Queensland, Wodyetia bifurcata grows as a solitary palm. A multi-stem plant is several palms grown together from the start so their trunks rise at staggered heights, producing the layered grove effect that a single trunk cannot give. The fronds are plumose, with leaflets radiating in all directions around the stalk like a fox's brush, and the crownshaft is self cleaning, so old fronds drop away without pruning.
Why Foxtail Palm
Staggered Trunk Heights: Three or more stems of differing height give depth and a natural grove look from a single planting position.
Plumose Fronds: The bottlebrush frond shape is unmistakable and reads as tropical from a long distance.
Self Cleaning Crownshaft: Spent fronds abscise cleanly on their own, which removes the ladder work that many palms demand.
Australian Native: A genuinely local species that suits native and tropical planting schemes alike.
Drought Hardy Once Set: Established palms tolerate long dry spells far better than most tropical looking alternatives.
Ideal Applications
Entry Statement: A multi-stem clump beside a driveway or portico delivers layered height and generous scale.
Pool Surrounds: Low litter and a tidy crown make it one of the better palms near water and paving.
Commercial Forecourts: Stands up to reflected heat, wind and low maintenance regimes in resort and civic landscapes.
Lawn Grove Feature: Set in open turf the staggered trunks throw a shifting pattern of shade through the day.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m between clumps
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Spring to early autumn, while soil temperatures are high
Soil & Drainage: Free draining sand, gravel or loam; it copes with poor fertility but not with a waterlogged root zone
Establishment Care: Water twice weekly through the first summer, then reduce steadily as the root system extends. Feed with a controlled release palm fertiliser containing magnesium and potassium in spring and mid summer, and protect young palms over their first winters in districts that see frost, since only brief light frost is tolerated by established plants.
