Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Red Tops Golden Penda - Xanthostemon chrysanthus ‘Red Tops’
‘Red Tops’ is the selection of Xanthostemon chrysanthus grown for its brilliant red new growth, which flushes repeatedly through the warm months and effectively doubles the colour season of an already showy Queensland rainforest tree. The golden yellow, fluffy pompom flowers arrive in heavy flushes and are worked hard by lorikeets and honeyeaters. Where the plain species is planted for flowers alone, this form carries interest between flowerings as well.
Why Red Tops Golden Penda
Red Growth Flushes: Vivid scarlet new leaves emerge several times a year, giving colour outside the flowering periods.
Golden Flower Heads: Dense clusters of bright yellow stamens smother the canopy, most reliably from autumn into winter.
Bird Magnet: The nectar-heavy flowers draw rainbow lorikeets, honeyeaters and native bees.
Compact Crown: Stays smaller in gardens than the species does in rainforest, keeping it usable on a suburban block.
Glossy Evergreen Canopy: Dark, leathery leaves hold well through humidity and heat with minimal leaf drop.
Ideal Applications
Feature Tree: A single specimen in a front lawn carries a subtropical garden through both the flowering and flushing seasons.
Street and Verge Planting: Widely used in Brisbane and further north for its manageable size and reliable display.
Native Screen: Rows at closer centres give a dense flowering screen without the pest problems of some lilly pillies.
Habitat Garden: Central to a nectar-focused planting aimed at bringing birds into a subtropical or tropical garden.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 3m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Spring through to early autumn in frost-free districts
Soil & Drainage: Moist, well-drained soil with organic matter; tolerates a range of soils but resents drying out completely
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice a week through the first two summers, because dry spells during establishment cause leaf drop and delay the first good flowering. Mulch to 75mm with coarse bark, apply a slow release native fertiliser in spring, and protect young trees from frost in marginal southern locations.
