Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Little Penda - Xanthostemon verticillatus
Little Penda is the compact relative of the Golden Penda, a north Queensland rainforest species with small glossy leaves arranged in neat whorls up the stems. Xanthostemon verticillatus flushes bronze red new growth and carries clusters of cream white flowers with prominent stamens on and off through the warmer months. It has become a favourite for subtropical hedging because it holds a dense, fine textured form under clipping and stays genuinely small, which very few rainforest natives do.
Why Little Penda
Whorled leaf arrangement: Leaves ring the stem in tidy tiers, giving an unusually structured, almost conifer like texture.
Coloured new growth: Fresh flushes emerge bronze to red and hold for weeks, so clipping is rewarded with colour.
Hedging response: It branches densely from the base and takes regular trimming without thinning out.
Bird attracting flowers: The cream white stamen clusters bring honeyeaters and native bees through the warm months.
Coastal tolerance: It handles humid coastal conditions and moderate salt exposure in tropical and subtropical gardens.
Ideal Applications
Formal native hedge: Clipped at 1 to 1.5m it makes a dense low hedge for tropical and subtropical front gardens.
Small feature tree: Left unpruned and lifted it forms a neat small tree for courtyards and entry beds.
Screening in narrow beds: Its modest width suits the tight planting strips along driveways and side boundaries.
Habitat and bird planting: Grouped in a native mixed border it feeds honeyeaters without dominating the space.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1.2m apart
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 3m apart
Best Planting Season: Spring through summer in the warm growing months
Soil & Drainage: Free draining soil enriched with organic matter, kept moist but not waterlogged, and it dislikes heavy cold clay
Establishment Care: Water twice weekly for the first summer, as young plants are far less drought tolerant than established ones. Mulch to 75mm, feed with a native safe slow release fertiliser in spring, and start light tip pruning early to build density from the base rather than trying to correct a leggy plant later.
