Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Coontie - Zamia integrifolia
A low growing cycad rather than a palm or fern, coontie forms a tight rosette of stiff, glossy, dark green pinnate leaves from an underground stem. Zamia integrifolia is one of the toughest cycads in cultivation, coping with full sun, sandy soil, coastal salt, extended drought and light frost, while staying small enough for a front garden bed. It is planted where the look of a cycad is wanted without the eventual scale and cost of a large sago or Australian burrawang.
Why Coontie
Compact Cycad Form: A mature plant stays around a metre across, so the prehistoric texture fits a domestic bed.
Extreme Drought Tolerance: The underground caudex stores reserves, letting the plant sit through long dry periods unwatered.
Sun and Shade Range: It grows in open sun or under a canopy, which is unusual for a plant this tough.
Coastal Suitability: Sandy soil and salt laden wind cause it no trouble.
Uniformity: Massed plantings look consistent and formal because the plants grow to a similar size and shape.
Ideal Applications
Massed Low Planting: Repeated in a bed it produces an even textured groundcover with real structure.
Contemporary Entries: A row of matched plants against rendered walls suits modern architecture.
Coastal and Water Wise Gardens: It fits schemes designed for sandy soil and little irrigation.
Container Culture: Slow growth means a potted plant holds its shape and size for many years.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.6 to 0.9m for a continuous mass
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.2 to 1.5m
Best Planting Season: Spring to early autumn while soil is warm
Soil & Drainage: Sandy, sharply draining soil; the underground stem rots in wet heavy ground
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first summer and then only occasionally, as this plant fails from too much water far more often than too little. Mulch with gravel or coarse bark clear of the crown, and note that all parts of a cycad are toxic if eaten, so keep it away from areas used by small children and pets.
