Redlands Jujube - Ziziphus jujuba ‘Redlands’
Jujubes are the answer for gardeners who want fruit in a climate that punishes everything else. Ziziphus jujuba shrugs off searing heat, alkaline soil and long dry spells, and Redlands is a warm climate selection that crops in subtropical Queensland and northern New South Wales where winter chilling is short. Fruit is eaten crisp and apple-like while still green-gold, or left on the tree to wrinkle and sweeten into something very close to a date.
Why Redlands Jujube
Heat And Drought Hardiness: Thrives in conditions that stop apples, pears and stone fruit outright.
Low Chill: Suited to warm subtropical districts where high chill deciduous fruit trees fail to set.
Two Crops In One: Pick early for a crisp apple texture or late for a dense, sweet, date-like dried fruit.
Clean Foliage: Small glossy leaves are notably free of the pests and fungal problems that plague other fruit trees.
Late Leaf Break: Jujubes leaf out very late in spring, which takes them past the risk of frost damage to new growth.
Ideal Applications
Subtropical Orchard: A dependable fruit tree for warm coastal and inland Queensland home orchards.
Dry Climate Feature: The glossy foliage and zigzag branching look deliberate in a low water garden.
Edible Avenue: Spaced along a drive it gives shade and a crop with almost no irrigation once established.
Difficult Soils: One of the few productive trees that accepts alkaline and mildly saline ground.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m in an orchard row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m
Best Planting Season: Late winter to spring, just before the tree breaks dormancy
Soil & Drainage: Free draining, preferably sandy soil. It tolerates alkalinity and mild salinity but will not survive waterlogging.
Establishment Care: Water regularly through the first two summers to build the frame, then cut back sharply, as an overwatered jujube grows soft and fruits poorly. Keep moisture consistent while fruit is sizing, and remove rootstock suckers, which appear readily from surface roots.
