Waterfall Bower Wattle (Standard) - Acacia cognata ‘Waterfall’
Trained onto a clear stem, this dwarf river wattle stops being a groundcover and becomes a fountain: a head of thread-fine, lime-green weeping foliage that hangs almost vertically and moves with the slightest air. Acacia cognata ‘Waterfall’ is prized for texture rather than flowers, giving the softest foliage of any native standard and a bright fresh green that lifts dark corners and grey paving. It is a genuinely useful designer plant, provided it is given the drainage and airflow it insists on.
Why Waterfall
Thread-Fine Foliage: Narrow weeping phyllodes create a texture no clipped exotic standard can imitate.
Bright Lime Green: New growth is a vivid fresh green that reads as a highlight against dark walls or deep green planting.
Self-Forming Head: The natural weeping habit shapes itself, needing only a light tidy rather than shearing.
Quick to Fill: It puts on head volume rapidly, so a standard looks established within a season.
Honest Lifespan: Like most cultivated wattles it is not a long-term tree, typically giving five to ten good years, and it resents wet feet and heavy summer humidity.
Ideal Applications
Feature Pots: A large container by an entry or on a terrace, where the skirt spills over the rim.
Poolside Softening: Fine foliage and soft movement beside water, with light, easily managed litter.
Courtyard Focal Point: Its texture carries a small paved space without any need for flowers.
Repeated Border Accent: A line of standards above low native grasses and groundcovers.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.2 to 1.5m in a repeated row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or early spring; avoid planting into hot dry soil in midsummer
Soil & Drainage: Sharply drained sandy or gravelly soil is essential; mound the planting position on clay and never plant into a low, damp spot
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first summer only, then rely largely on rainfall, as overwatering is the most common cause of sudden collapse. Mulch with coarse bark kept clear of the stem, feed only with low phosphorus native fertiliser, and give it an open, airy position rather than a still, enclosed one.
