Overview & Specifications

Swamp Yate - Eucalyptus occidentalis

Where most trees concede to difficult ground, Eucalyptus occidentalis holds its position. A native of WA's challenging inland plains, Swamp Yate brings commanding vertical structure and year-round presence to sites where soil conditions, wet, saline, or compacted, would compromise lesser specimens.

Why Swamp Yate

Exceptional soil tolerance: One of few large-canopy natives proven to perform in waterlogged, saline, and heavy clay soils without compromise.
Strong vertical form: Upright growth habit delivers height and structural definition without excessive lateral spread, disciplined in scale.
Distinctive bark character: Smooth, mottled bark and grey-green foliage contribute refined texture and year-round visual interest.
Proven native resilience: Established specimens tolerate dry periods and climatic extremes, demanding little ongoing intervention.
Landscape scale presence: Reaches 10 to 20 metres at maturity, carrying genuine weight in large-scale compositions.

Ideal Applications

Problem-site planting: The definitive choice for low-lying or saline zones where soil conditions eliminate most alternatives.
Large-scale screening and shelter: Provides substantial height and canopy density for boundary screening and windbreak installations on exposed sites.
Rural and acreage projects: Well suited to broad-acre landscapes, revegetation works, and pastoral property amenity planting.
Contemporary native compositions: Integrates with authority into bushland-informed and large-format native landscape designs.

Specimen & Installation

Spacing (screening/hedge): 4–6m

Planting Season: Autumn to spring, avoiding the hottest summer months
Soil & Drainage: Tolerates heavy clay, waterlogged, saline, and poorly drained soils; highly adaptable
Establishment Care: Water deeply once or twice per week for the first two summers until established, then little to no supplemental irrigation is required. Mulch around the base to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds during the establishment period.
