Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Violet Box Elder - Acer negundo var. violaceum
The reason to plant this maple is a fortnight in very early spring, when bare branches hang with violet tinted flower tassels before a single leaf opens. Acer negundo var. violaceum also carries a distinct purple bloom on its young shoots, visible right through winter. Beyond the display it is simply a fast, adaptable shade tree for cold inland districts, tolerating soils from wet clay to dry alkaline ground that would stall most maples.
Why Violet Box Elder
Violet shoots: New wood carries a purple waxy bloom that stands out against winter grey.
Tassel flowers: Pendulous violet tinted flower clusters appear on bare wood before the foliage.
Fast establishment: It puts on height quickly, delivering usable shade within a few seasons.
Wide soil tolerance: Wet, dry, heavy or alkaline soils are all accepted, which few maples manage.
Brittle wood: Limbs can break in storms, so formative pruning of tight forks matters, and it is worth siting away from creek lines where box elders are known to self seed.
Ideal Applications
Fast rural shade: On acreage it provides stock and paddock shade far sooner than slower growing trees.
Windbreak backdrop: Planted in a row it forms the tall rear layer of a mixed shelter belt.
Large lawn feature: In an open lawn the winter branch colour earns its place through the cold months.
Cold district screening: It performs strongly in frosty inland areas where many screening trees are marginal.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 5 to 6m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 8 to 10m
Best Planting Season: Autumn to late winter while dormant
Soil & Drainage: Almost any soil, including heavy clay and periodically wet ground; deep loam simply produces a better tree
Establishment Care: Water deeply once a week through the first two summers and keep the root zone free of competing turf. Mulch clear of the trunk, and prune out narrow, tightly angled forks in the first few years, since these are the unions most likely to fail later in wind.
