Dawson River Weeper Bottlebrush - Callistemon viminalis 'Dawson River Weeper'
This is the large weeping bottlebrush, a selection of Callistemon viminalis that builds a genuine small tree with long, pendulous branchlets hanging almost to the ground and heavy crops of red brushes in spring and again in autumn. It is one of the few Australian natives that will hold its own in heavy clay and periodically wet ground where most feature trees fail. Where the site is difficult and the budget is for one tree that has to work, this is the honest answer.
Why Dawson River Weeper Bottlebrush
True weeping form: Long, fine branchlets fall vertically from an arching frame, giving the profile of a willow with none of the root trouble.
Wet soil tolerance: It accepts heavy clay, seasonal inundation and creek line positions that would kill most ornamental trees.
Twice yearly flowering: Crimson brushes cover the canopy in spring and repeat in autumn, feeding honeyeaters and lorikeets.
Fast establishment: Rapid growth gets shade and screening onto a bare block sooner than almost any other native tree of this size.
Tough and low input: Once established it needs no more than a hard prune after flowering to stay dense and well shaped.
Ideal Applications
Feature shade tree: A single specimen on a lawn reaches 6 to 10m and carries the weeping canopy at a scale you can sit under.
Wet and low lying ground: Planted along a drainage swale or dam edge where soil stays damp for parts of the year.
Rural driveway avenue: Repeated down a long drive at 5 to 8m centres it forms an arching corridor with minimal maintenance.
Windbreak and boundary screening: Massed on an exposed boundary it filters wind and blocks sightlines on acreage and semi-rural blocks.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m
