Forest Flame Lilly Pilly - Acmena smithii ‘Forest Flame’
‘Forest Flame’ is a compact lilly pilly selected for the intensity of its new growth, which flushes brilliant scarlet against glossy dark green mature foliage several times a season. Acmena smithii is the psyllid resistant side of the lilly pilly family, so unlike many Syzygium hedges it does not disfigure with pimpled, blistered leaves in humid weather. Landscapers choose it where a coloured evergreen hedge is wanted at two to three metres without the ongoing pest management that older lilly pilly plantings demanded.
Why Forest Flame
Psyllid Resistance: Acmena stock is naturally resistant to the lilly pilly psyllid, avoiding the pitted leaf damage common on susceptible cultivars.
Repeat Colour Flush: New growth emerges vivid red to orange and holds for several weeks, and light trimming triggers another flush.
Dense to the Base: It branches low and stays furnished at ground level, so a hedge does not go bare legged after a few years.
Edible Berries: Fluffy white summer flowers are followed by pink to mauve fruit that birds take readily.
Clipping Tolerance: It responds well to shearing and can be held anywhere from 1.2m to its full height.
Ideal Applications
Formal Screening Hedge: Planted in a single row it makes a solid two to three metre privacy screen along a boundary within a few seasons.
Narrow Side Access: Its naturally upright habit suits the tight strip between a house wall and fence where wider screeners will not fit.
Pool Surround: Non invasive roots and low leaf drop compared with many evergreens make it a practical choice near paving and pool coping.
Feature Cluster: Grouped in threes and left unclipped it becomes a soft mounded shrub mass with seasonal red highlights.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1.2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Spring and autumn. In frost prone districts plant in spring so growth hardens before winter.
Soil & Drainage: Prefers a moisture retentive but well drained soil enriched with organic matter. It dislikes drying out completely and will not tolerate standing water over the crown.
Establishment Care: Water two to three times a week through the first summer, particularly in a hedge row where plants compete with one another for the same soil volume. Mulch the entire row to 75mm and give a slow release native or general purpose fertiliser in early spring and again after the first hard trim.
