Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Lion Century Plant - Agave americana ‘Lion’
The century plant is the largest and boldest of the commonly grown agaves, and ‘Lion’ is a selected clone of Agave americana grown for a heavy, symmetrical rosette of thick recurving leaves. What it delivers in a landscape is pure geometry: a single plant reads as a fixed sculptural object that never needs deadheading, staking or irrigation once established. It also earns its keep where nothing else will hold, on hot exposed banks, gravel beds and coastal frontages with salt wind and no water.
Why Lion Century Plant
Architectural Mass: A mature rosette holds a strong fixed form that anchors a planting scheme without seasonal change.
Water Independence: Once rooted in, it survives on rainfall alone through most of southern and inland Australia.
Exposure Tolerance: Handles reflected heat, salt laden coastal wind and thin poor soil without deteriorating.
Terminal Spines: Each leaf ends in a hard sharp spine and carries hooked teeth along both margins, so it needs a setback of at least 1.5m from paths, seating, play areas and pool edges. Wear gloves and eye protection when handling or trimming.
One Time Flowering: The rosette flowers once on a tall spike after many years and then dies, leaving offsets around the base to carry on.
Siting note: This species has naturalised in parts of southern Australia, so avoid planting adjacent to bushland reserves and remove pups as they appear.
Ideal Applications
Gravel and Succulent Garden: The obvious centrepiece among smaller aloes, sedums and ornamental grasses.
Architectural Bed: Set against rendered or board formed concrete, it holds a strong silhouette year round.
Coastal Frontage: Copes with wind, sand and salt where most feature plants scorch.
Oversized Container: Excellent in a wide bowl or trough where drainage is guaranteed.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a screening plant. In a defensive or barrier row, 2 to 2.5m apart.
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3m, with clear access all round.
Best Planting Season: Spring to early autumn while the soil is warm.
Soil & Drainage: Sharp drainage is not negotiable. Gritty sandy soil, a raised bed or a mound on heavier ground, and no irrigation over winter.
Establishment Care: Water monthly through the first summer only, then leave it alone. Use a gravel or crushed rock mulch rather than organic mulch, and keep all mulch away from the base of the rosette so the crown stays dry.
