Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Ceratozamia latifolia
A compact Mexican cycad grown for the theatre of its new growth: each flush of fronds emerges a deep bronze to wine red before hardening to matt green, and the leaflets are unusually broad for the genus. Ceratozamia latifolia comes from limestone cloud forest, so unlike most cycads sold in Australia it wants shade and moisture rather than baking sun. Designers reach for it where a cycad is needed under canopy and Zamia furfuracea would sulk.
Why Ceratozamia latifolia
Coloured Flush: New fronds open bronze-red and hold that colour for several weeks before greening.
Broad Leaflets: Wide, flat leaflets give a softer, more tropical silhouette than the needle-leaved cycads.
Shade Performance: One of the few architectural cycads that genuinely prefers filtered light.
Compact Scale: Stays low and wide, so it never outgrows a courtyard or an entry bed.
Longevity: A slow, long-lived plant that improves for decades with almost no intervention.
Toxicity warning: All parts, especially the seeds, are highly toxic to dogs and people if eaten, so consider placement in a pet household.
Ideal Applications
Understorey Planting: Sits comfortably beneath established trees where turf and most shrubs fail.
Courtyard Feature: Reads as living sculpture in a shaded, sheltered courtyard bed.
Tropical Garden Layering: Fills the middle layer between ferns and palms with harder, more defined form.
Large Container Work: Suits a wide pot on a covered terrace, where the frond flush can be viewed closely.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.2m to 1.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2m to 3m
Best Planting Season: Spring through to early autumn, while soil is warm
Soil & Drainage: Free-draining, humus-rich soil; raise the bed or add coarse sand on heavy clay
Establishment Care: Keep the root zone evenly moist for the first two summers without letting the crown sit wet, and mulch with coarse leaf litter clear of the caudex. Withhold heavy feeding and let the plant set its own pace; a slow-release fertiliser at the start of spring is enough.
