Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Octopus Agave - Agave vilmoriniana
Long narrow leaves twist and arch away from the crown in every direction, which is how this plant got its name. Agave vilmoriniana carries no marginal teeth at all and its leaves are flexible, so it is one of the few large agaves that can safely sit beside a doorway or a pool coping. It grows quickly by agave standards and holds a loose gestural shape that suits contemporary planting better than the rigid rosette types.
Why Octopus Agave
Toothless leaves: No marginal spines and a soft tip make it the safest of the large agaves around people.
Movement: Leaves curl and twist rather than sitting flat, giving a plant that looks alive rather than static.
Quick establishment: It reaches full size in three to five years, fast for a plant of this scale.
Bulbils: The flower spike produces hundreds of small plantlets that can be grown on, so the plant leaves a legacy.
Shade tolerance: Unlike most agaves it keeps good form in part shade and under high branched trees.
Ideal Applications
Poolside and path edges: Safe to plant where a toothed agave would be a liability.
Raised pots and plinths: Elevating it lets the arching leaves cascade over the rim.
Dry garden feature: A single specimen holds the centre of a gravel bed without needing companions.
Dappled light beds: Works under open canopied trees where other succulents stretch and flop.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.2 to 1.5m for a massed group
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2m
Best Planting Season: Spring to early autumn
Soil & Drainage: Sharply drained sandy or gravelly soil; mound the planting position in clay so water moves away from the crown
Establishment Care: Water every two weeks for the first warm season, then only during long dry spells, keeping water out of the centre of the rosette. Gravel mulch to 40mm suits it better than bark, and light frost is tolerated while hard frost will mark the foliage.
