Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Red Ash - Alphitonia excelsa
Wind is what shows this tree off. Alphitonia excelsa holds dark green leaves with dense white felt on the underside, so every gust turns the whole canopy silver, and a mature specimen visibly changes colour from across a paddock. It is a fast pioneer species from eastern and northern Australia, used where a hardy native shade tree is needed quickly, and the crushed leaves carry a distinctive sarsaparilla scent that gives it the alternative name of soap tree.
Why Red Ash
Silver Flash: White backed leaves create a shimmering two tone canopy in any breeze.
Establishment Speed: A pioneer by nature, providing real shade within four or five years on a warm site.
Local Provenance: An Australian native across a wide range from coastal Queensland to the Northern Territory and inland New South Wales.
Wildlife Value: Host plant for several native butterfly species, with fruit taken by birds and flowers worked by insects.
Aromatic Foliage: Crushed leaves release a distinct sarsaparilla or liniment scent, a reliable field identifier.
Ideal Applications
Fast Shade: Planted for a usable canopy over lawn or a yard in a few seasons.
Revegetation And Habitat: A nurse tree used to shelter slower rainforest species while they establish.
Street And Park Planting: Widely used as a hardy native street tree in Queensland and northern New South Wales.
Rural Windbreak: Tough enough for exposed boundaries on warm climate acreage.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m for a closed shelter row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6 to 8m for full crowns
Best Planting Season: Spring through early autumn in warm zones, at the start of the wet season in the tropics
Soil & Drainage: Very adaptable, from sands to clay loams, provided drainage is reasonable. Tolerates poor and shallow soils better than most rainforest trees
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first summer to get roots away, then reduce sharply, as this species becomes genuinely drought hardy once settled. Mulch with a coarse native mulch kept clear of the trunk, protect young trees from frost in their first two winters, and form prune early to a single leader if a clean trunk is wanted for a street or lawn position.
