Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Assorted Banana - Musa spp.
Bananas are not trees at all but giant perennial herbs: the trunk is a tight column of leaf bases, and each stem flowers and fruits once, then dies back while suckers take its place. A clump of Musa delivers tropical scale faster than anything else you can plant, with paddle leaves up to 2m long by the end of a single warm season. Assorted stock means the variety supplied varies with what is available at the time.
Why Bananas
Instant Scale: A clump reaches full height within a season, which no woody plant can match.
Fruiting Cycle: Each stem carries one bunch and is then cut out, with the suckers around it carrying the clump forward.
Screening: Dense clumps quickly block a fence line, a shed wall or a neighbouring window.
Microclimate: Broad leaves cast shade and hold humidity, sheltering gingers, cordylines and other understorey planting.
Shelter Needed: Leaves shred in strong wind, so a protected corner or courtyard keeps them looking their best.
Ideal Applications
Tropical garden: The defining plant of a subtropical planting scheme in Queensland and northern New South Wales.
Poolside planting: Provides height and lushness in warm sheltered courtyards.
Productive backyard: A small clump supplies fruit for a household in a warm climate.
Fast corner screen: Fills an awkward gap while slower woody plants establish.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2-2.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3-4m
Best Planting Season: Spring and early summer in warm districts. Note that banana planting is regulated in Queensland and in parts of New South Wales to limit the spread of disease, so confirm the current requirements for your area before planting.
Soil & Drainage: Deep, rich, well drained soil with plenty of compost, kept moist but never waterlogged
Establishment Care: Water two or three times a week through the warm months, as bananas are heavy drinkers and heavy feeders. Mulch thickly with compost or aged manure, and thin each clump to one fruiting stem plus one or two followers.
