Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Sweet Bursaria - Bursaria spinosa
Sweet Bursaria earns its common name in midsummer, when the whole shrub disappears under sprays of tiny white flowers that carry a strong honey scent across a garden. Bursaria spinosa is a tough, thorny native shrub or small tree with fine dark green foliage, arching branches and distinctive purse shaped seed capsules that persist into autumn. It is planted where a hard wearing habitat shrub is needed: the spiny interior shelters small birds, and it is one of the most important nectar plants for native butterflies and beneficial insects in south eastern Australia.
Why Sweet Bursaria
Fragrant Summer Flowering: Dense white panicles open from December through February, one of the strongest scents in the indigenous flora.
Insect and Butterfly Value: It is a documented food plant for a range of native butterflies and supports large numbers of beneficial predatory insects.
Protective Thorns: Spiny branchlets create safe nesting habitat for wrens and finches and make an effective natural barrier.
Seed Capsule Interest: Flattened purse shaped capsules colour tan to bronze and hold on the plant well after flowering.
Extreme Hardiness: It tolerates frost, drought, poor soils, coastal exposure and hard cutting back with equal indifference.
Ideal Applications
Habitat and Corridor Planting: A core species in indigenous restoration work throughout Victoria, New South Wales and Tasmania.
Security Barrier: Planted along a rear boundary the thorny growth deters access without a built structure.
Understorey Filler: Sits naturally beneath eucalypts and wattles where a mid layer is missing.
Low Care Rural Screen: Handles paddock edges, gravel driveways and unirrigated verges without attention.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Autumn to early spring across southern Australia.
Soil & Drainage: Grows on almost anything from sand to clay, acid or limestone derived, provided drainage is reasonable. Low fertility is entirely acceptable.
Establishment Care: A deep soak every ten to fourteen days through the first summer is all it asks, and after that it should be left dry. Mulch to suppress grass competition, and cut back hard in late winter every few years if the plant becomes open or leggy, since it reshoots strongly from old wood.
