Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Bursaria tenuifolia
Bursaria tenuifolia is the fine leaved eastern cousin of the better known blackthorn, and it is grown for one thing above all: an enormous summer haze of tiny white flowers over airy, narrow foliage. Ecologically it is a workhorse, feeding native butterflies, parasitic wasps and small nectar seeking insects, so it appears constantly in habitat briefs and biodiversity planting schedules. In a designed garden it functions as a light, semi transparent shrub layer rather than a solid mass.
Why Bursaria tenuifolia
Summer Flowering: Flowers arrive in the heat of December and January when most native shrubs have finished, and carry a soft honey scent.
Insect Habitat: It is one of the strongest butterfly and beneficial insect plants available in eastern Australia.
Fine Texture: Narrow leaves and thin branchlets give a see through quality that softens fences and heavier evergreen planting.
Seed Capsules: The flattened purse shaped capsules that follow flowering hold on the bush and give a second, quieter season of interest.
Low Maintenance: It is far less spiny than the common blackthorn and tolerates a hard cut back to rejuvenate an old plant.
Ideal Applications
Biodiversity and habitat beds: Planted in drifts of three or five to sustain butterflies and predatory insects through summer.
Informal native screen: Makes a light, non solid boundary planting where full visual blocking is not required.
Mixed shrub layer: Sits well between grevilleas, westringias and native grasses without dominating them.
Rural and bushfire buffer planting: Suits low input rural gardens and paddock edges once established.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.5m centres
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 3m centres
Best Planting Season: Autumn or early spring; avoid planting into peak summer heat
Soil & Drainage: Adaptable to sand, loam or gravelly soils provided drainage is reasonable; slightly acidic to neutral is ideal
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first two summers, giving a slow deep soak rather than frequent sprinkles. Mulch to 50mm, keep the collar clear, and tip prune lightly after flowering to build density.
