Hannah Ray Bottlebrush - Callistemon viminalis ‘Hannah Ray’
‘Hannah Ray’ is the weeping bottlebrush selection that landscape contractors default to when a client wants a small native tree that flowers hard and survives neglect. Bred from Callistemon viminalis, it carries silvery grey new growth on genuinely pendulous branchlets and throws deep red brushes in spring, then usually again in autumn. It handles the two conditions that kill most small trees in Australian gardens: periods of waterlogging in winter and long dry spells in summer.
Why Hannah Ray
Weeping Habit: Branchlets hang rather than stand, so it softens hard fencing, retaining walls and boundary lines.
Two Flushes: Main flowering is spring, with a reliable secondary autumn display in most warm temperate and subtropical districts.
New Growth Colour: Fresh shoots emerge silvery grey and slightly silky, giving a second colour effect between flowering.
Wet and Dry Tolerance: It accepts seasonally damp ground and heavy soils, then copes with extended dry once rooted.
Honeyeater Magnet: The brushes bring in wattlebirds, lorikeets and small honeyeaters within a season of planting.
Ideal Applications
Small street and verge tree: Fits under most service lines and gives seasonal colour in narrow nature strips.
Boundary screening row: Planted at close centres it forms a dense informal screen without needing formal clipping.
Swale and drainage line planting: Suited to detention basins and low points that hold water after storms.
Native habitat garden: Anchors a bird focused planting alongside grevilleas, banksias and lomandra.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m centres
Spacing (feature/avenue): 3 to 4m centres
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring across most of Australia; avoid frost periods in cold inland areas
Soil & Drainage: Very adaptable, from sandy loam to clay; prefers slightly acidic soil and tolerates periodic wet feet
Establishment Care: Water twice weekly for the first eight weeks, then weekly through the first summer. Mulch to 75mm, use a low phosphorus native fertiliser in spring, and prune straight after flowering to keep the crown compact.
