Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Huntsman Camellia - Camellia ‘Huntsman’
Camellias earn their place by flowering in the dead of winter, and Camellia ‘Huntsman’ belongs to the large flowered group grown for individual bloom size rather than sheer flower count. The plant itself is an upright evergreen shrub with glossy dark foliage that holds condition all year, quite happy in the shaded southern or eastern side of a house where flowering shrubs are usually a struggle. Given acidic soil and shelter from afternoon sun, it will outlive the person who plants it.
Why Huntsman Camellia
Large winter blooms: Substantial flowers in the pink to red range open through winter and into early spring.
Shade performance: It flowers well in dappled light and morning sun, where most flowering shrubs will not.
Year round foliage: Thick glossy leaves make it a legitimate evergreen screen even out of flower.
Acid soil requirement: It needs acidic, organic soil and will yellow badly in limey or alkaline ground.
Long lived: Well sited camellias remain productive for many decades with minimal intervention.
Ideal Applications
Shaded hedge: Planted in a row it screens a south facing boundary that defeats most hedging plants.
Wall espalier: Trained flat on a shaded wall it takes up a very narrow bed and flowers at eye level.
Large container: In an ericaceous potting mix it performs well on a shaded terrace or courtyard.
Woodland border: It fits beneath high canopy alongside azaleas, hellebores and ferns.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m
Best Planting Season: Autumn to early spring, ideally outside the flowering peak
Soil & Drainage: Acidic soil at pH 5.5 to 6.5, high in organic matter and freely draining; never limey or compacted
Establishment Care: Water consistently through late summer and autumn while flower buds are forming, as dry spells then cause the buds to drop before they open. Mulch with leaf litter or composted bark kept clear of the stem, and prune immediately after flowering rather than later in the year.
