Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Betty Ridley Camellia - Camellia japonica ‘Betty Ridley’
Formal double blooms of soft pink, each one laid out in perfectly regular overlapping petals, set Camellia japonica ‘Betty Ridley’ apart from the looser peony and anemone forms. It flowers through the cold months on a compact, glossy-leaved evergreen frame, which is the practical reason gardeners choose japonica camellias: structure and dark foliage all year, then a long display exactly when the rest of the garden has stopped.
Why Betty Ridley Camellia
Formal double flowers: Petals are arranged in precise rows with no visible stamens, giving an almost rose-like symmetry.
Winter display: Flowering runs through the coldest part of the year, filling the gap between autumn and spring.
Glossy foliage: Thick, dark, high-shine leaves make it a strong evergreen backdrop plant in its own right.
Shade performance: It flowers well in positions with only morning sun, where most flowering shrubs will not.
Longevity: Japonica camellias are long-lived shrubs that improve for decades with very little intervention.
Ideal Applications
South-facing garden beds: Reliable in the cool shaded side of a house where sun-loving shrubs fail.
Informal screening hedge: Planted in a row to build a dense evergreen divider that flowers in winter.
Under established trees: A natural understorey plant beneath deciduous canopy or tall eucalypts with high crowns.
Large pots and entries: Well suited to substantial containers flanking a doorway in a shaded courtyard.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.2m centres
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m
Best Planting Season: Autumn through winter is ideal, and planting in flower lets you confirm the bloom
Soil & Drainage: Acidic, humus-rich, free-draining soil. Camellias will not tolerate lime, waterlogging or a root zone that dries hard, and they must not be planted deeper than the original soil level.
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice a week through the first two summers, paying particular attention to late summer when next season's buds are forming. Mulch with composted leaf litter or pine bark to 75mm kept clear of the trunk, feed with an azalea and camellia fertiliser after flowering, and shelter from hot dry westerly wind.
