Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Coconut Magnolia - Michelia coco
Grown almost entirely for its perfume, Michelia coco carries small nodding white cups that release a rich tropical scent of coconut and banana, strongest in the evening. It is a compact, slow growing evergreen with thick, glossy, leathery leaves that look good year round, and it flowers repeatedly from spring through to autumn rather than in one short burst. Plant it where people pass close by, because the fragrance is the entire reason for growing it.
Why Coconut Magnolia
Evening perfume: The coconut and banana scent intensifies at dusk, which suits outdoor dining and bedroom windows.
Repeat flowering: Flushes of flowers continue through the warm months instead of a single spring display.
Heavy glossy foliage: Thick dark leathery leaves give a lush subtropical look and resist wind damage.
Shade tolerance: One of the better fragrant evergreens for a position that only receives morning sun.
Restrained size: Slow and compact, so it stays in scale in a courtyard or a large pot for many years.
Ideal Applications
Doorway and window planting: Sited where the evening scent enters the house through an open window.
Courtyard container: Its slow growth and neat root system suit long term life in a large pot.
Shaded side garden: Fills a narrow east facing strip that most flowering shrubs will not tolerate.
Fragrant screen: Planted in a run it forms a low dense screen of around 2 to 3m with perfume through summer.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1 to 1.5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m
Best Planting Season: Spring and early autumn, once frost risk has passed
Soil & Drainage: Rich, moist, slightly acidic and free draining soil with plenty of organic matter; avoid dry sand and heavy wet clay alike
Establishment Care: Water twice weekly through the first two summers and never let the root zone dry out, as flower buds abort under drought stress. Mulch to 75mm over the shallow roots, shelter it from frost and cold wind, and feed after each flowering flush with a fertiliser for acid loving plants.
