Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Grand Slam Camellia - Camellia japonica ‘Grand Slam’
‘Grand Slam’ is one of the show varieties that made big red japonicas famous: very large blooms in deep, saturated red, semi double to anemone form, with a boss of gold stamens at the centre. Camellia japonica ‘Grand Slam’ grows more vigorously and more openly than many japonicas, building a tall shrub with thick dark leaves that set the flower colour off hard. It flowers mid season, through the middle of winter into early spring.
Why Grand Slam
Bloom Size: Flowers are among the larger japonica types, often 12cm or more across, and read clearly from a distance.
Depth of Colour: Dark red petals with gold stamens give a contrast that pale flowered camellias cannot match in low winter light.
Vigour: It grows more strongly than average for a japonica, so it fills a screening role faster.
Shade Flowering: Bud set and bloom quality hold up in dappled light and on cool aspects.
Evergreen Structure: Thick glossy foliage carries the plant visually for the nine months it is not flowering.
Ideal Applications
Winter Colour Feature: Placed within view of a window, it delivers the strongest colour available in a shaded winter garden.
Tall Informal Screen: A row along a shaded boundary gives privacy with a genuine flowering season.
Woodland Style Border: Works with azaleas, hellebores, hydrangeas and ferns in an acid soil planting.
Cut Flower Supply: The large blooms float beautifully in a bowl, which is how show camellias are traditionally displayed.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.2m to 1.8m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2m to 2.5m
Best Planting Season: Autumn to early spring
Soil & Drainage: Acidic, open, humus rich soil at pH 5.5 to 6.5 with drainage that never leaves roots sitting wet
Establishment Care: Deep, consistent watering through the first two summers matters more than anything else, since summer dryness shows up as dropped buds the following winter. Mulch the shallow root system, never cultivate around the base, and prune lightly straight after flowering to keep the habit dense.
