Man Size Camellia (Ball) - Camellia japonica ‘Man Size’
‘Man Size’ is a miniature flowered Camellia japonica, producing small white anemone form blooms on a naturally compact, densely branched plant. That combination of tight growth and small leaf is exactly why it clips into a ball so well, where a large flowered japonica would grow too open and too coarse. Supplied here already trained as a sphere, it delivers clipped formality through winter in the shaded parts of a garden that most topiary subjects cannot handle.
Why Man Size
Miniature white flowers: Small anemone form blooms are produced in quantity across the surface of the ball through winter.
Naturally compact: Dense short jointed growth means the sphere stays furnished and needs less corrective cutting.
Winter flowering: It blooms in the middle of winter, when a clipped evergreen would otherwise be doing nothing but holding shape.
Shade formality: It provides geometric structure in filtered light where sun loving topiary species thin and open.
Glossy foliage: Dark polished leaves give the ball a rich surface even out of flower.
Ideal Applications
Entry pair: Two matched balls either side of a shaded front door give year round formality and a winter bonus.
Shaded formal bed: Repeated at set spacing they hold the geometry of a parterre in light too low for box.
Glazed pot feature: In a large container with acidic mix it performs for many years with minimal root disturbance.
Side courtyard structure: In a narrow shaded space it delivers presence without any spread beyond its clipped diameter.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.2 to 1.5m centres for a row of separate balls
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m as a standalone accent
Best Planting Season: Autumn and spring, avoiding the hottest weeks of summer
Soil & Drainage: Acidic, humus rich and free draining. Add composted pine bark to clay soils and plant slightly high so the crown never sits wet
Establishment Care: Water two to three times a week through the first summer, keeping soil moisture steady, since camellias drop their buds when stressed in late summer. Keep a permanent 75mm organic mulch in place, feed with a camellia and azalea food once flowering finishes, and clip to shape in early spring so the developing buds for the next season are not lost.
