Volunteer Camellia (Espalier) - Camellia japonica ‘Volunteer’
An espaliered camellia solves a problem that comes up constantly in Australian courtyards: a shaded wall, a bed barely wide enough to kneel in, and a client who still wants flowers. Camellia japonica ‘Volunteer’ is grown flat on a frame, producing large double blooms in pink tones through winter against thick, glossy, dark green foliage. The trained framework is already built, so the panel reads as finished from the day it goes in.
Why Volunteer Camellia
Cold Season Flowering: Blooms arrive when the garden is at its quietest, from mid winter through into early spring.
Flat Growth Habit: Trained tiers hold close to their support, keeping paths, gates and paving clear.
Shade Tolerance: Japonica camellias flower properly in dappled light, which very few flowering wall plants manage.
Year Round Foliage: The leaf is thick and lustrous, so the panel still looks deliberate for the nine months it is not in flower.
Low Maintenance Shape: One prune immediately after flowering keeps the framework tight for the rest of the year.
Ideal Applications
Narrow Courtyard Bed: Delivers wall coverage where there is not enough depth for a conventional shrub.
Shaded Fence Line: Dresses a boundary on the cool side of the house that would otherwise stay bare.
Framed Wall Panel: Presented against render or brick, the trained tiers work like a piece of green joinery.
Privacy Between Neighbours: Adds height and density along a fence without stealing floor area from a small garden.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5m to 2m for a continuous trained face
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5m to 3m for separated panels
Best Planting Season: Autumn to early spring
Soil & Drainage: Acidic, open and humus rich, pH 5.5 to 6.5, with drainage that never leaves the root ball sitting wet
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice a week through the first two summers, particularly where a masonry wall radiates afternoon heat. Mulch the shallow surface roots with composted bark, keep the mulch off the stem, and feed with a camellia food once flowering has finished.
