Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Sasanqua Camellia - Camellia sasanqua
The workhorse of Australian evergreen hedging. Camellia sasanqua differs from the better known japonica in three ways that matter: it takes far more sun, its leaves are smaller so it clips into a tighter surface, and it flowers in autumn and early winter rather than late winter. That combination is why it turns up as hedges, espaliers and narrow screens in gardens from Perth to Sydney to Melbourne.
Why Sasanqua Camellia
Autumn flowering: Blooms open from around March through to June, filling a genuinely quiet season.
Sun tolerance: Unlike most camellias it holds up in full sun in southern Australia, and in part sun further north.
Clips tightly: Small leaves and dense twiggy growth allow a crisp formal hedge face.
Espaliers readily: Flexible young growth trains flat against a fence or wall with little effort.
Light fragrance: Many forms carry a soft scent, noticeable in still autumn air.
Ideal Applications
Formal clipped hedge: Held anywhere between 1.5 and 3m, it gives a dense evergreen wall.
Fence espalier: Trained flat it screens a boundary in a bed only 300mm deep.
Narrow side access screening: Its upright forms suit tight setbacks between houses.
Large containers: It performs long term in pots given an acidic mix and consistent water.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1.2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m
Best Planting Season: Autumn to early spring
Soil & Drainage: Acidic to neutral, organic rich and free draining; it yellows in alkaline or limey soils
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice a week through the first summer, tapering in the second, and never let a hedge line dry out unevenly or the face will thin. Mulch the full row with composted bark clear of the stems, and trim straight after flowering in late winter so the new growth has all season to set next year's buds.
