Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Rainbow Camellia - Camellia sasanqua ‘Rainbow’
Sasanquas do the job japonicas cannot: they take full sun, they clip hard, and they flower in autumn. ‘Rainbow’ carries single white blooms edged with a rose-pink picotee, scattered generously over small glossy leaves from about March into early winter. Where a hedge or espalier has to flower and still hold a crisp face, Camellia sasanqua is the standard Australian choice.
Why Rainbow Camellia
Autumn Flowering: Bloom starts as the garden winds down, months before the japonicas open.
Sun Tolerance: Unlike japonicas it will take full sun all day in most temperate districts.
Fine Leaf: Small glossy foliage clips to a tight, fine textured face rather than a coarse one.
Trains Flat: Flexible young growth makes it one of the easiest evergreens to espalier on a wall or fence.
Picotee Flower: White petals rimmed in rose pink, with a boss of gold stamens at the centre.
Ideal Applications
Formal Hedge: Clipped to 1.5 to 2m for a flowering evergreen boundary.
Espalier: Trained flat against a wall or on wires in a narrow side passage.
Boundary Screen: An unclipped row for privacy between houses.
Container Standard: Grown on a clear stem in a large pot beside an entry.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1.2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 2.5m
Best Planting Season: Autumn and spring, with autumn preferred in warm districts so roots settle before summer
Soil & Drainage: Slightly acidic, free draining soil enriched with compost. Avoid limey ground and waterlogged clay.
Establishment Care: Keep the rootball evenly moist for the first two summers, watering at the base rather than over the foliage. Mulch 75mm deep with pine bark and prune straight after flowering to build density.
