Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Sasanqua Camellia (Standard) - Camellia sasanqua
The sasanqua is the workhorse camellia of Australian gardens: smaller leaved, faster, sun-tolerant and autumn flowering, and it is the only camellia that reliably makes a good trained standard. Camellia sasanqua grown on a clear stem gives a rounded evergreen head of glossy dark foliage that covers itself in flower from autumn into early winter, when almost nothing else in a shaded garden is performing. It brings height and formality to a narrow bed without the root spread or the water demand of a deciduous ornamental tree.
Why the Sasanqua Standard
Autumn Season: Flowering runs from around March into June depending on district and selection, filling the gap between summer and winter colour.
Handles Sun: Unlike japonica camellias, sasanquas tolerate several hours of direct sun, so a standard can sit in an open courtyard.
Dense Small Foliage: The fine leaf makes a tight, well-defined head that takes clipping without looking butchered.
Narrow Footprint: The clear trunk lets you plant right up to it, useful in a side passage or a tight garden bed.
Clean Petal Drop: Flowers shed petals individually, so the plant stays presentable without deadheading.
Ideal Applications
Boundary Rhythm: A line of standards along a fence lifts screening interest above the fence line without a solid hedge.
Front Door Pairs: The classic formal use, in ground or in matched pots.
Side Passage Planting: Narrow shaded strips where a full shrub would block the walkway.
Above Groundcover Beds: The clear stem allows dense underplanting right beneath the canopy.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.2 to 1.5m in a repeated row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or early spring
Soil & Drainage: Acidic to neutral, humus rich, free draining soil; avoid lime, builder's rubble and alkaline fill
Establishment Care: Water twice weekly through the first summer and never allow the root ball to dry out during flower bud formation in late summer, as that is what causes bud drop. Mulch thickly over the shallow root system and feed with a camellia fertiliser once flowering finishes, pruning the head at the same time.
