Captain Cook Bottlebrush - Callistemon viminalis ‘Captain Cook’
Where the weeping bottlebrush is wanted at hedge height, ‘Captain Cook’ fills the role: a dense, rounded native shrub that keeps its foliage down to the ground and finishes at 1.5 to 2m instead of reaching the small tree size of the species. Callistemon viminalis ‘Captain Cook’ smothers itself in bright red brushes each spring. Low hedges, borders along the front of a house and massed native beds are its work, the jobs where a taller selection would need constant cutting to stay in scale.
Why Captain Cook Bottlebrush
Compact by nature: It stays dense and mounded without regular clipping, so a planting looks finished from its first season.
Pink to bronze new growth: Fresh shoots colour the bush between flowering flushes before hardening to narrow deep green leaves.
Long colour season: The spring display is the main event, but new brushes keep opening here and there until autumn.
Coastal wind tolerance: It holds its leaf in second line beachside gardens and exposed corners where salt and wind thin softer shrubs.
Damp ground tolerance: It handles heavy soil and the wet patches where many low hedging plants rot.
Ideal Applications
Low flowering hedge: Clipped lightly once the flowers fade, it holds a neat 1.5 to 2m hedge along a front fence, path or driveway edge.
Foundation planting: It clothes a blank wall, the base of a deck or a plain fence without outgrowing its spot.
Mass planting: Groups of five or more knit into one textured, flowering layer in native beds, verges and commercial frontages.
Courtyard native gardens: Its tidy rounded shape suits small native schemes where a full sized bottlebrush would crowd the space.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.9 to 1.2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.5 to 2m
Best Planting Season: Spring or autumn; in frost prone inland gardens, plant once the frosts have passed
Soil & Drainage: Sandy coastal soil through to clay loam; copes with periodically damp ground but not standing water
Establishment Care: Soak the root ball every two or three days for its first two months, then weekly until its first summer is over. Prune lightly within the leafy outer growth after each flowering to keep the mound dense and even.
