Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Little Dugald Pohutukawa - Metrosideros collina ‘Little Dugald’
‘Little Dugald’ compresses the pohutukawa into a low, tight, small leafed mound that sits comfortably below window height. Flowers are the same deep red brushes as its larger relatives, produced mainly through summer and often sporadically at other times, set against small dark glossy leaves with a paler reverse. Its real strength is coastal: it shrugs off salt wind and sandy soil that shreds most compact flowering shrubs.
Why Little Dugald
Genuinely dwarf: It holds to knee or waist height, so it can be planted in front of windows and along low walls without ongoing cutting back.
Red brush flowers: Vivid crimson stamens open through summer, giving full pohutukawa colour on a miniature plant.
Salt and wind hardiness: Exposed coastal frontages, sea spray and sandy soil are all handled without leaf burn.
Fine dense foliage: Small leathery leaves pack tightly, giving a neat surface that responds well to light shearing.
Bird attracting: Honeyeaters work the flowers, unusual in a plant of this small size.
Ideal Applications
Low coastal hedge: Planted in a line it makes a clipped border that survives full beachfront exposure.
Front of border massing: Repeated in groups it provides evergreen structure ahead of taller shrubs.
Pots and planter boxes: Its compact roots and slow growth suit long term container planting on decks and balconies.
Low maintenance verge: On a hot, dry nature strip it holds form and flowers with minimal input.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.6 to 0.8m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1 to 1.5m
Best Planting Season: Spring or autumn in frost free coastal districts
Soil & Drainage: Free draining sandy or gravelly soil is ideal; it tolerates poor ground but not heavy wet clay. Improve or mound heavy soils before planting.
Establishment Care: Water twice weekly for the first summer, then only during extended dry spells, since it is drought tolerant once rooted. Mulch lightly, feed sparingly with a slow release fertiliser in spring, and shear immediately after the main flowering flush to keep the mound dense rather than cutting into old bare wood.
