Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Siamese Cassia - Cassia siamea
A fast, dense shade tree for tropical and subtropical Australia, Cassia siamea holds a broad evergreen crown of pinnate foliage and produces upright golden yellow flower panicles through the warmer months. It is planted where quick canopy is the priority: parks, wide verges and rural shade lines in the far north, where its heat tolerance and tolerance of poor soil beat slower native options.
Why Siamese Cassia
Rapid canopy: It puts on useful shade within a few seasons rather than a decade, which is why it appears so often in tropical street planting.
Long flowering: Terminal panicles of bright yellow flowers appear over an extended period through summer and autumn.
Dense shade: The finely divided foliage is held thickly enough to cast genuine shade at midday in the tropics.
Poor soil tolerance: It performs on thin, compacted and low-fertility soils that would stall most ornamental trees.
Heat and dry season hardiness: Established trees ride out the northern dry season without irrigation.
Ideal Applications
Shade tree for large properties: Sited in an open lawn or paddock corner where the spreading crown has room to develop.
Tropical avenue planting: Repeated along a long driveway for quick, uniform canopy in the far north.
Windbreak and shelter belt: Used in rows to soften hot dry wind across rural and acreage sites.
Reclaiming difficult ground: Establishes on degraded or compacted soil where other trees fail to take.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 4 to 6m centres for a shelter belt
Spacing (feature/avenue): 8 to 10m
Best Planting Season: Early wet season in the tropics, or spring in subtropical districts
Soil & Drainage: Tolerant of a wide range of soils including poor and sandy ground, provided drainage is reasonable. It will not accept prolonged waterlogging or frost.
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice weekly for the first three months, then weekly through the first dry season. Stake young trees against wind, mulch out to the drip line, and remove seedlings that appear nearby, as this species sets heavy pod crops and can self-sow in warm districts. Seed and pods are toxic if eaten, so avoid planting where stock or pets graze.
