Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Finger Lime - Citrus australasica
The finger lime is Australia's own citrus, a thorny rainforest understorey shrub that produces elongated cylindrical fruit filled with tiny juice vesicles that separate like caviar when the skin is squeezed. Citrus australasica grows naturally on the edges of subtropical rainforest in south east Queensland and northern New South Wales, which tells you what it wants: warmth, shelter, free draining soil and protection from harsh afternoon sun while young. It is grown as much for the fruit's place on restaurant menus as for the fine textured, densely twiggy plant itself.
Why Finger Lime
The Fruit: Finger shaped limes release pearl like vesicles that burst with a sharp lime flavour, prized by chefs and unavailable from any other citrus.
Native Credentials: A genuine Australian bush food species rather than an imported crop, suited to east coast conditions.
Fine Foliage: Tiny dark green leaves on densely twiggy growth give a delicate texture unlike the coarse leaves of common citrus.
Thorny Security: Sharp spines along the stems make a planted row an effective deterrent hedge.
Shade Tolerance: As a natural understorey plant it will crop in a position that gets only part of the day in sun.
Ideal Applications
Bush Food Garden: The anchor plant in an Australian edible planting with lemon myrtle and native mint.
Barrier Hedge: Close planted along a boundary where the thorns discourage entry.
Large Pot Culture: Grown in a container on a warm terrace where drainage and frost protection can be controlled.
Understorey Fruiting: Planted beneath larger trees in a subtropical garden, mimicking its rainforest margin habitat.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 3m
Best Planting Season: Spring through to early autumn while soil is warm
Soil & Drainage: Free draining, slightly acidic soil rich in organic matter, mounded on clay, and sheltered from frost and cold drying wind
Establishment Care: Water twice weekly through the first year, keeping moisture even rather than swinging between wet and bone dry, which causes fruit drop. Mulch well away from the trunk, feed with a citrus fertiliser in spring and again in late summer, and protect young plants from frost for the first two winters.
