Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Green Kumquat (Standard) - Citrus japonica
Trained as a standard, the kumquat becomes a piece of formal geometry that also happens to fruit. Citrus japonica has small, neat, glossy leaves and a naturally dense twiggy habit, which is exactly what a clipped ball head needs, and it holds bright orange fruit through winter against dark green foliage. This is the citrus that suits a formal courtyard, a pair either side of a doorway or a run of matched pots along a terrace, where a full sized lemon would be too coarse.
Why Green Kumquat
Clipped Head: Fine foliage and short internodes let the ball hold a crisp outline with two or three trims a year.
Winter Fruit: Small round fruit colours through winter and holds on the tree for months, so the display lasts.
Edible Rind: The sweet skin and tart flesh are eaten whole, which is unusual among citrus and useful in marmalade and preserving.
Fragrant Flowers: Repeated flushes of small white flowers carry a strong citrus perfume through the warmer months.
Cold Tolerance: The most cold hardy of the commonly grown citrus, which widens where a formal citrus standard is workable.
Ideal Applications
Entry Pair: Matched standards flanking a front door give instant formality and are read as architecture.
Formal Kitchen Garden: Repeated at the corners of raised beds to give a potager its vertical structure.
Terrace and Balcony Pots: The clear stem lifts the canopy above balustrade height and keeps the floor plan open.
Courtyard Avenue: A short run of standards down a paved path delivers rhythm in a small space.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.2 to 1.5m for a repeated run
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2 to 3m, or in matched pairs
Best Planting Season: Spring and early autumn, avoiding cold wet soil in winter
Soil & Drainage: Free draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil. Citrus will not tolerate wet feet, so raise the bed or plant on a mound in heavy clay
Establishment Care: Keep water up consistently through the first two summers, as uneven watering causes fruit drop, and never let a standard in a container dry out completely. Feed with a complete citrus fertiliser in late winter and again in late summer, keep the trunk clear of mulch and grass, remove any shoots that appear on the clear stem or below the graft, and clip the head lightly after each growth flush to hold the shape.
