Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Native Lime - Citrus spp.
Australia's own citrus, including the finger lime and the desert lime, sit in a different niche from imported types. These Citrus species evolved in rainforest margins and inland scrub, so they carry thorns, fine foliage and a tolerance of conditions that would set back a Tahitian lime. They are planted as much for their bushfood crop and their fine textured habit as for ornament.
Why Native Lime
Bushfood Crop: The fruit is a genuine commercial ingredient, prized for its caviar-like or intensely acid pulp.
Fine Texture: Small leaves and slender twiggy growth read much lighter than a conventional citrus canopy.
Local Adaptation: Australian provenance means better tolerance of local soils, heat and seasonal dry spells.
Thorny Barrier: Spiny stems make a genuinely deterrent boundary planting where security matters.
Shade Flexibility: Rainforest types accept dappled light, which few other fruiting citrus will.
Ideal Applications
Bushfood Garden: The central productive plant in an Australian edible collection alongside midyim and warrigal greens.
Understorey Planting: Finger lime types grow well beneath the filtered canopy of larger rainforest trees.
Secure Hedging: Massed and lightly clipped it forms a thorny, impenetrable low barrier.
Container Specimen: Slow steady growth makes it well suited to a large pot on a sheltered terrace.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.2 to 2m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 4m
Best Planting Season: Spring and early autumn, avoiding the coldest and hottest weeks
Soil & Drainage: Free draining soil with organic matter for rainforest types, sharper and drier for desert lime, pH 6 to 7.5
Establishment Care: Water twice weekly for the first summer and mulch heavily to keep the shallow roots cool. Feed lightly with a native or low phosphorus citrus fertiliser and protect young growth from heavy frost in inland districts.
