Silver Shadow Kashmir Cypress - Cupressus cashmeriana ‘Silver Shadow’
Long flattened sprays of silver-blue foliage hang almost vertically from arching branches, giving Cupressus cashmeriana ‘Silver Shadow’ a curtain-like weeping habit that no other conifer of this size matches. It is grown as a feature tree rather than a hedge: the value is entirely in the pendulous silhouette and the pale colour, which needs open space around it to be read properly.
Why Silver Shadow Kashmir Cypress
Weeping foliage sprays: Foliage hangs in long flattened ribbons that move visibly in even light wind.
Silver blue colour: This selection is grown for a stronger silver cast than the ordinary form.
Conical outline: A broad conical frame beneath the weeping foliage keeps the tree balanced and symmetrical.
Soft texture: The foliage is fine and pliable, unlike the stiff scale foliage of most cypress.
Manageable size: It stays smaller than most feature conifers, so it suits a large garden rather than only parkland.
Ideal Applications
Lawn specimen: The best use, with clear ground all round so the weeping form can hang to the base.
Formal garden centrepiece: Anchors the end of an axis or the centre of a circular bed.
Entry pair: Two trees flanking a driveway or gateway on a large property.
Colour contrast planting: Its silver blue reads strongly against dark green hedging or stone walls.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m centres if planted in a row, though it is not a clipped hedge plant
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6 to 8m
Best Planting Season: Autumn and spring, avoiding both hard frost periods and mid-summer heat
Soil & Drainage: Deep, well drained soil with steady moisture. It dislikes both waterlogging and prolonged drought, and it resents strong hot wind, which browns the foliage tips.
Establishment Care: Water deeply twice a week for the first three months and weekly through the first two summers, keeping water at the root zone rather than over the foliage. Mulch widely to keep roots cool, stake young trees on exposed sites, and avoid any shearing, as it will not reshoot from bare old wood.
