Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Assorted Tree Ferns - Cyathea spp.
This is a mixed selection drawn from the genus Cyathea, so plants will vary in trunk thickness, frond length and eventual height depending on the species supplied. What they share is the growth form that makes tree ferns so useful: a fibrous upright trunk carrying a rosette of large, deeply divided fronds, creating a canopy layer at two to five metres that no shrub can imitate. Buy an assorted batch when the objective is a naturalistic grove with variation in it rather than a matched formal set.
Why an Assorted Batch
Natural variation: Differing trunk widths and frond lengths make a group read as a wild stand rather than a planted row.
Instant canopy layer: Tree ferns create overhead shade quickly, which then supports the smaller ferns planted beneath them.
Deep shade tolerance: They occupy positions too dark for most flowering plants, including south facing walls and gully floors.
Humidity generators: A close planted group raises local humidity, which benefits every plant in the bed.
Epiphyte support: Fibrous trunks host mosses, elkhorns and small orchids as the planting matures.
Ideal Applications
Naturalistic grove: Massed at irregular spacing with varied trunk heights, the effect closely mimics a rainforest gully.
Fernery understorey: They form the structural layer above maidenhairs, birds nests and ground ferns.
Difficult shaded corners: Dark, damp areas where nothing else thrives are exactly where they perform.
Screening at height: A dense group filters an unwanted view at first floor level while the ground plane stays open.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 1.5 to 2m apart for a dense overlapping grove that filters a view
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 3m where individual trunks are to be seen clearly
Best Planting Season: Autumn and spring in mild, moist weather. Avoid establishing through hot dry spells
Soil & Drainage: Deep, permanently moist, humus rich soil with free drainage. Shade, humidity and wind shelter are non negotiable
Establishment Care: Water the trunks and crowns as well as the soil three or more times a week through the first summer, as the fibrous stem absorbs a large share of the water the plant uses. Keep a thick leaf litter mulch in place year round, never allow the crown to dry out, and cut off old fronds only after they have completely browned.
