Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Winter Apple - Eremophila debilis
An eastern Australian coastal native that behaves like a groundcover rather than the shrub its family name suggests, this plant runs flat across the soil in a dense mat of bright green foliage. Eremophila debilis, still often sold under its old name Myoporum debile, carries small white to pale lilac flowers through the warmer months, then produces the fleshy pink to purple fruit that gives it the common name Winter Apple. It is a tough, low, quietly attractive native for verges, embankments and any area where lawn is not wanted.
Why Winter Apple
Flat Spreading Mat: Stems run along the ground and root as they go, closing over bare soil and suppressing weeds.
Winter Fruit: Rounded pink to purple fleshy fruit follows the flowers and sits attractively against the foliage in the cooler months.
Coastal Tolerance: It handles sandy soil, salt-laden wind and exposed positions on the eastern seaboard.
Light Foot Traffic: Tough enough to take occasional walking over, unlike most flowering groundcovers.
Very Low Water: Once rooted in it survives on rainfall in most coastal and temperate districts.
Ideal Applications
Verge and Nature Strip: A low, drought-hardy native replacement for turf that needs no mowing.
Embankment Cover: Its rooting runners bind loose soil on a slope.
Under Established Trees: Copes with root competition and dappled light where turf thins out.
Wall and Planter Spill: Trails over the edge of a retaining wall or raised bed.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 0.8 to 1m for a closed mat
Spacing (feature/avenue): 1.2 to 1.5m where plants are to remain distinct
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring in temperate districts; year round on the frost free coast
Soil & Drainage: Free draining sandy or gravelly soil; it tolerates poor and infertile ground but not heavy wet clay
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first summer while the runners knit together, then only in extended dry weather. Mulch lightly between plants until coverage closes, use a low phosphorus native fertiliser if feeding at all, and trim back the leading edges in late winter to keep it inside its bed.
