Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Sugar Gum - Eucalyptus cladocalyx
Sugar gum is a South Australian dry country tree that has been planted across the southern half of the continent for shelter and timber because it grows fast, stands up to drought and wind, and holds a straight trunk. Eucalyptus cladocalyx is easily recognised by its smooth mottled bark in cream, yellow and grey, shed in irregular patches, and by the way the crown carries foliage in dense clumps rather than as an even canopy. This is a large tree, and it needs to be sited accordingly.
Why Sugar Gum
Bark Pattern: Smooth trunk mottled in cream, orange and grey that renews each summer as the old bark falls.
Drought Endurance: Native to the dry Flinders Ranges and Eyre Peninsula, it holds condition through long rainless periods.
Wind Resistance: Strong timbered and deep rooting, one of the standard windbreak eucalypts on southern farmland.
Soil Range: Grows on shallow, alkaline and limestone influenced soils where many eucalypts struggle.
Stock Caution: The foliage is known to be toxic to grazing animals, so it is a poor choice for paddock shade where sheep or cattle can browse fallen leaves.
Ideal Applications
Farm Windbreak: Planted in rows across prevailing winds on open rural land.
Large Property Avenue: A long driveway planting on acreage where its eventual scale can be accommodated.
Revegetation: Used widely in southern Australian landcare and dryland forestry projects.
Timber and Firewood Lots: Grown for its hard, durable timber on small woodlots.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 4 to 6m in a shelterbelt
Spacing (feature/avenue): 10 to 15m
Best Planting Season: Autumn to early winter in southern districts, so roots establish before summer
Soil & Drainage: Well drained soils of low to moderate fertility, including shallow, stony and alkaline ground, but not permanently wet sites
Establishment Care: Water fortnightly through the first summer and then leave it to find its own moisture, as sugar gum resents pampering. Keep grass and weeds cleared for a metre around the trunk for the first two years, and plan the position with its mature height and root spread in mind, well clear of buildings, drains and paving.
