Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Broad-Leaved Ironbark - Eucalyptus fibrosa
Broad-Leaved Ironbark is a hard country tree. Eucalyptus fibrosa holds deeply furrowed, almost black ironbark right out to the small branches and carries broad dull grey green adult leaves, giving it a heavier and more sculptural outline than the smooth barked gums. It grows on shallow, infertile clay where better looking trees fail, and it flowers white through summer when nectar is scarce.
Why Broad-Leaved Ironbark
Persistent Black Bark: Deeply furrowed ironbark covers the entire trunk and branches, and unlike gums it never sheds to a smooth surface.
Poor Soil Performance: Established on shallow clay and gravel country that will not carry a more demanding species.
Dry Season Endurance: Deep rooting and genuinely drought hardy once past establishment.
Summer Nectar: Flowers through the warmer months and is a well known nectar source for bees and honeyeaters.
Wind Firm Frame: Heavy timber and a stout branch structure make it stable on exposed rural sites.
Ideal Applications
Acreage Shade: Provides stock and paddock shade with a trunk tough enough to take rubbing.
Parks and School Grounds: Large scale canopy for open public space well clear of buildings.
Wildlife Corridors: A key nectar and habitat species in dry sclerophyll revegetation.
Screening Degraded Clay Sites: Establishes on compacted or worked-over ground where other trees stall.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 6 to 8m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 10 to 14m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring, or at the start of the summer rains in Queensland
Soil & Drainage: Tolerant of shallow, infertile clay, gravel and loam. It prefers free drainage but copes with heavy soils, and it does not want rich, constantly wet ground
Establishment Care: Water fortnightly through the first summer only, since eucalypts establish faster when made to chase moisture downward. Mulch a wide ring clear of the trunk and keep grass competition off the root zone for the first two years.
