Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Melbourne Yellow Gum - Eucalyptus leucoxylon subsp. connata
Yellow Gum is one of the most widely planted street trees in southern Australia, and this is its Melbourne form, a naturally occurring subspecies from the basalt plains around the city. Eucalyptus leucoxylon subsp. connata keeps a rough stocking of dark bark at the base and sheds above it to smooth cream and yellow, and it holds a denser, more compact crown than the typical subspecies. It flowers cream through the cooler months, when very little else is feeding nectar birds.
Why Melbourne Yellow Gum
Two-Toned Trunk: A dark fibrous base gives way to clean cream and yellow smooth bark above, a more interesting trunk than most street gums.
Winter Nectar: Flowering falls in autumn and winter, filling the gap for honeyeaters and lorikeets.
Heavy Clay Tolerance: Evolved on Melbourne's basalt clay soils, so it handles ground that drowns other trees in winter.
Contained Crown: Denser and more compact than the wider ranging forms of the species, which makes it easier to site.
Frost and Drought Hardiness: Comfortable with hard frost and long dry summers alike.
Ideal Applications
Street and Verge Planting: A proven Melbourne street tree with a predictable form and manageable litter.
Suburban Shade: Big enough to shade a house wall on a standard block without dominating it.
Indigenous Planting: The correct local provenance choice for gardens on the Melbourne basalt plains.
Rural Shelter Rows: Reliable and wind firm in windbreak plantings on heavy soils.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 5 to 7m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 8 to 12m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or early spring in southern Australia
Soil & Drainage: Handles heavy clay, loam and improved sand across a wide pH range. Free drainage is preferred but not essential, and it accepts seasonally wet winter soils
Establishment Care: Water deeply every ten to fourteen days through the first summer rather than little and often, so roots follow moisture down. Mulch a metre-wide ring, keep it off the trunk, and remove competing grass for the first two seasons.
