Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Little Spotty Brittle Gum - Eucalyptus mannifera ‘Little Spotty’
The brittle gum has one of the best trunks of any Australian tree, and this dwarf selection puts it at eye level. Eucalyptus mannifera ‘Little Spotty’ keeps the powdery white bark that flushes pink, apricot and rust through summer as the old layer sheds, but on a small tree that suits a suburban block rather than a paddock. Fine blue green weeping foliage sits above the trunk, so the bark stays the feature rather than being buried in canopy.
Why Little Spotty
Trunk Colour: Smooth powdery white bark that develops pink and orange blotches through the shedding season, changing week to week.
Reduced Size: A dwarf form of a tree that would otherwise reach 15m or more, making it viable near houses and under services.
Frost Hardiness: Comes from the cold tablelands of the ACT and southern New South Wales and handles hard frost without damage.
Drought Endurance: Established trees carry through long dry periods with no supplementary water.
Light Canopy: Fine pendulous leaves cast dappled rather than dense shade, so grass and understorey planting still grow beneath.
Ideal Applications
Verge And Street Planting: Small mature size suits nature strips and positions beneath lower power lines.
Native Feature Tree: A single specimen where the trunk can be seen and lit at night.
Habitat Gardens: Flowers feed native bees and the canopy provides shelter for small birds.
Dry Climate Landscapes: Grouped in threes through gravel and native grasses on low water sites.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m in an informal row
Spacing (feature/avenue): 5 to 6m for individual crowns
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring, avoiding the hottest and coldest weeks
Soil & Drainage: Free draining soils preferred, from sandy loam to gravel. Tolerates poor and shallow ground, but not permanent wet
Establishment Care: Water weekly through the first summer only, then wean the tree off irrigation entirely, since eucalypts kept on regular water grow soft, top heavy and prone to failure. Use a coarse native mulch kept clear of the trunk, avoid high phosphorus fertilisers, and stake low and loosely so the stem can flex and build strength.
