Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Swamp Gum - Eucalyptus ovata
Most eucalypts sulk in wet ground. Eucalyptus ovata was built for it, occurring naturally on the poorly drained flats, swamp margins and heavy clay soils of Victoria, Tasmania and southern New South Wales. It carries broad, glossy, egg shaped leaves on a spreading crown with rough grey bark at the base grading to smooth above, and it flowers white through the cooler months. Where a site floods after rain and everything planted there has failed, this is the tree that will not.
Why Swamp Gum
Wet Ground Tolerance: Handles seasonal inundation and heavy clay that drowns nearly every other tree of comparable size.
Broad Leaves: Glossy dark green, distinctly oval foliage gives a fuller canopy than the narrow leaved gums.
Cool Season Flowering: White flower clusters open from autumn through winter into spring, supporting nectar feeders in the lean months.
Cold Hardiness: Frost hardy across the cool temperate south, including Tasmania and the Victorian highlands.
Habitat Value: A recognised food tree in swamp woodland communities and an important species in southern revegetation work.
Ideal Applications
Wet Site Rehabilitation: The standard choice for damp flats, drainage lines and dam surrounds.
Rural Shelterbelt: Planted through windbreaks where ground stays boggy through winter.
Indigenous Revegetation: Used in swamp woodland restoration across Victoria and Tasmania.
Large Property Shade: A broad crowned shade tree for acreage where its eventual size is not a constraint.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 5 to 8m in a shelterbelt
Spacing (feature/avenue): 10 to 12m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring, avoiding planting into standing water
Soil & Drainage: Tolerates heavy clay, poor drainage and seasonal waterlogging, and also grows well on ordinary well drained loam, though not on hot dry sandy sites
Establishment Care: Plant slightly proud on a low mound if the site holds standing water for long periods, and water weekly through the first summer if the ground dries out. Keep competing grass cleared for a metre around the trunk and stake only where wind exposure demands it.
