Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Swamp Gum (Mornington Peninsula) - Eucalyptus ovata
Swamp Gum is the eucalypt to plant where water sits. Eucalyptus ovata occupies the seasonally waterlogged flats, drainage lines and heavy clay soils that kill most other trees, and it does it while forming a shapely, spreading crown of glossy dark green leaves on a smooth grey and cream mottled trunk. This is Mornington Peninsula provenance stock, matched to local soils, and it flowers through the cooler months when nectar is scarce.
Why Swamp Gum
Wet Soil Tolerance: It survives and thrives in seasonally inundated ground and heavy clay where other eucalypts drown.
Cool Season Nectar: White flowers open across autumn into spring, a critical food source for honeyeaters, lorikeets and native bees in winter.
Glossy Broad Leaves: The rounded, lustrous adult foliage gives a denser, greener canopy than most local eucalypts.
Mottled Trunk: Bark sheds to leave a smooth grey, cream and pale yellow patchwork on the upper trunk and limbs.
Local Habitat Value: It is a keystone species of Peninsula swampy woodland and supports a wide range of local fauna.
Ideal Applications
Wet Site Planting: The default choice for dam surrounds, drainage swales, boggy paddock corners and low lying clay flats.
Riparian Restoration: Standard in creek line and wetland revegetation across Victoria and Tasmania.
Rural Shade Tree: Its broad spreading crown provides good stock shade in paddocks that flood in winter.
Indigenous Canopy: Used with paperbarks and swamp wattle to rebuild the original vegetation of Peninsula low ground.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 4 to 5m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 10 to 12m
Best Planting Season: Autumn and early spring. On genuinely wet sites plant in spring as water levels drop.
Soil & Drainage: Suits heavy clays, loams and seasonally waterlogged soils, and will also grow on ordinary well drained ground. It is the rare eucalypt that does not require good drainage.
Establishment Care: On drier sites water fortnightly through the first summer, and on wet sites plant on a slight mound so the crown is not submerged during the first winter. Keep a weed free, mulched circle around the base for the first two years to remove grass competition.
