Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
White Peppermint - Eucalyptus pulchella
A Tasmanian endemic from the dry dolerite hills around Hobart, Eucalyptus pulchella is the most delicate looking of the peppermint gums. Its leaves are extremely narrow, almost needle fine, and hang in a soft weeping curtain from an open crown, while the trunk is smooth white to pale grey above a short rough stocking at the base. Crushed foliage carries the sharp peppermint scent that names the group. It is a cool climate tree for dry, well drained ground, and it gives a light, airy canopy rather than a heavy one.
Why White Peppermint
Fine Foliage: Very narrow, drooping leaves create a soft weeping texture uncommon in eucalypts.
Trunk Finish: Smooth white to pale grey bark shedding in ribbons, with a contrasting rough base.
Aromatic Leaves: The crushed foliage releases a strong peppermint oil scent.
Summer Flowers: Clusters of small white flowers open through December and January, well used by insects and birds.
Dry Site Adaptation: Evolved on shallow, stony, dry hillsides, so it suits gardens with thin soil and low rainfall.
Ideal Applications
Cool Climate Shade: A light canopy tree for gardens in Tasmania, Victoria and the southern tablelands.
Dry Slope Planting: Established on stony banks and hillsides where deeper rooted trees are impractical.
Native Woodland Groves: Grouped to build an open woodland character over native grasses.
Rural Windbreak: Included in shelterbelts on dry country in the cool temperate south.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 4 to 6m in a shelterbelt
Spacing (feature/avenue): 8 to 10m
Best Planting Season: Spring in cold districts, autumn in milder ones
Soil & Drainage: Well drained, shallow or stony soils of low fertility, and it dislikes both heavy waterlogged ground and hot humid summer conditions
Establishment Care: Water deeply every ten to fourteen days through the first summer, then rely on natural rainfall. Clear grass competition from a one metre circle around the trunk for the first two years and avoid over fertilising, which produces weak growth prone to wind damage.
