Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Red Ironbark - Eucalyptus sideroxylon
Deeply furrowed, near black bark that stays on the tree for life is the signature of the ironbarks, and Eucalyptus sideroxylon pairs that rugged trunk with soft blue grey foliage and pendulous flowers that range from cream through pink to deep rose. It flowers through autumn and winter, filling a gap when little else is producing nectar. Coming from the dry inland woodlands of Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria, it is drought hardy, frost hardy and content on poor soil.
Why Red Ironbark
Bark: Thick, deeply furrowed dark grey to black bark that persists to the smaller branches, giving strong year round character.
Foliage Contrast: Narrow blue grey leaves sit against the black trunk for a striking two tone effect.
Winter Flowering: Pendulous flowers in cream, pink or deep rose open from autumn through winter into early spring.
Drought and Frost Hardy: Handles both extremes of inland Australian conditions once its roots are established.
Habitat Importance: A major winter nectar tree for honeyeaters, lorikeets and box ironbark woodland fauna.
Ideal Applications
Character Feature Tree: A single specimen where the black trunk and blue foliage can be appreciated.
Rural Avenue: Long driveway plantings on acreage in inland districts.
Shelterbelt and Woodlot: Grown for shelter and for its extremely hard, durable timber.
Habitat Restoration: A keystone species in box ironbark woodland revegetation projects.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 5 to 7m in a shelterbelt
Spacing (feature/avenue): 8 to 12m
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring
Soil & Drainage: Well drained soils of low to moderate fertility, including gravelly and shallow ground, and it should not be planted where water sits after rain
Establishment Care: Water deeply once a fortnight through the first summer, encouraging roots to chase moisture downward rather than staying at the surface. Maintain a grass free circle for two years, mulch clear of the trunk, and site the tree well away from buildings and services given its mature size.
