Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
Fiddle Leaf Fig - Ficus lyrata
Best known indoors, Ficus lyrata is in fact a large African rainforest tree, and in frost free Australian gardens it behaves like one, forming a substantial canopy of huge violin shaped leaves up to 45cm long. Planted in the ground in Brisbane, northern New South Wales or Darwin it produces a dense evergreen screen with a leaf scale no other screening tree matches. That vigour is also the caution: this is a fig, with the root system of a fig, and it needs to be sited accordingly.
Why Fiddle Leaf Fig
Leaf Scale: Individual leaves reach 30 to 45cm, giving a bold texture that reads clearly from across a garden.
Dense Evergreen Cover: Overlapping foliage makes it one of the most complete privacy screens available in warm climates.
Rapid Growth: In humid subtropical conditions it puts on height quickly and closes a gap within a few seasons.
Glossy Surface: The waxy leaf surface stays clean and reflects light rather than looking dusty.
Indoor Versatility: In cooler southern states it performs as a container plant in a bright protected position.
Ideal Applications
Warm Climate Screening: A row along a boundary in the subtropics gives full height privacy fast.
Courtyard Statement: A single tree in a large open courtyard provides shade and architectural foliage.
Large Interior Containers: In bright indoor positions it holds at 2 to 4m with regular pruning.
Sheltered Terraces: Pot grown on a protected terrace where frost and cold wind are excluded.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 2 to 3m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6 to 8m in the ground
Best Planting Season: Spring to early summer, into warm soil
Soil & Drainage: Rich, free draining soil with steady moisture; it dislikes both drought and waterlogging
Establishment Care: Water two or three times a week through the first warm season and feed in spring and midsummer to support the fast growth. Mulch heavily, shelter young plants from cold dry wind and frost, and plant well clear of pipes, paving, pools and foundations, because the root system is vigorous and invasive like that of any fig.
