Overview & Specifications

Brown Turkey Fig - Ficus carica ‘Brown Turkey’
‘Brown Turkey’ is the fig most Australian gardeners end up with, and for good reason: it sets fruit without a pollinator, it crops young, and it tolerates a range of climates from Perth to the Hunter to suburban Melbourne. Fruit is medium sized with purple-brown skin and pink amber flesh, sweeter in a hot dry summer than a humid one. As a plant, Ficus carica earns its place twice over, since the large lobed leaves throw dense summer shade and then drop to let winter sun through.
Why Brown Turkey Fig
Self fertile: No second tree and no fig wasp are needed, so a single plant crops on its own.
Two possible crops: An early breba crop can form on last season's wood, followed by the main crop on new growth in late summer and autumn.
Seasonal shade: Broad summer foliage cools a paved area, then falls away to admit winter light where it matters.
Pruning tolerance: It can be kept at picking height, trained flat against a wall, or grown as an open vase without sulking.
Dry country resilience: Established trees handle heat, alkaline soil and low water better than nearly any other fruit tree.
Ideal Applications
Espalier against a wall: A warm north or west facing wall reflects heat and ripens fruit earlier and more sweetly.
Edible courtyard tree: Kept at three metres it gives shade over a table and fruit within reach.
Mediterranean planting scheme: It sits naturally alongside olives, pomegranates, rosemary and grape vines.
Large containers: Root restriction actually improves cropping and keeps the tree at a manageable size.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m, or 2.5m if espaliered
Spacing (feature/avenue): 4 to 5m
Best Planting Season: Winter while dormant, or early spring in cold districts
Soil & Drainage: Free draining, neutral to alkaline soil. Figs tolerate poor ground but not waterlogging, and the roots run wide and strong, so keep the tree well clear of drains, paving and septic lines.
Establishment Care: Water deeply once a week through the first two summers, and keep water up during fruit swell to prevent splitting and premature drop. Mulch to conserve moisture but hold it back from the trunk, and prune in winter only, since summer cuts bleed heavy latex and can cost you the crop.
