Frantoio Olive - Olea europaea ‘Frantoio’
Frantoio is the backbone of Tuscan oil production and the reason a great deal of Australian extra virgin oil tastes the way it does. Olea europaea ‘Frantoio’ carries a heavy crop of small fruit with high oil content and a peppery, grassy character, on an upright open tree with willowy grey green foliage that catches the light. It is also simply a very good landscape olive: long lived, drought hardy, and happy to be clipped into a formal shape or left to develop a gnarled trunk.
Why Frantoio
Oil Quality: A benchmark oil cultivar, producing fruity peppery extra virgin oil with good yield per tonne of fruit.
Self Fertility: Sets a useful crop on its own, though yields improve with a second cultivar nearby for cross pollination.
Foliage Movement: Narrow leaves flash silver undersides in the breeze, giving the canopy constant movement.
Drought And Heat: Deep rooted and genuinely low water once established, which suits Adelaide, inland Victoria and the Western Australian wheat belt.
Longevity: Olives are among the longest lived trees in cultivation, and the trunk becomes more characterful every decade.
Siting note: In some districts olive seedlings spread from dropped fruit, so collect windfall in gardens next to bushland.
Ideal Applications
Small Grove: Rows on a rural block for household oil production.
Mediterranean Courtyard: A single mature specimen underplanted with lavender, rosemary and gravel.
Formal Avenue: Clipped to matching rounded heads along a driveway.
Coastal And Exposed Sites: Tolerates salt wind, poor rocky soil and reflected heat.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): 3 to 4m for a dense row or hedge
Spacing (feature/avenue): 6 to 8m for full open crowns
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring, avoiding hard frost periods in cold districts
Soil & Drainage: Free draining above all else. Tolerates poor, rocky, sandy and alkaline soils, but waterlogging causes root rot and rapid decline
Establishment Care: Water fortnightly and deeply through the first two summers rather than frequently and lightly, which trains roots downward. Keep mulch coarse and clear of the trunk, prune in late winter to keep the centre open to light, and remove basal suckers as they appear so the tree holds a clean trunk.
