Overview & Specifications
Price includes everything: the plant, free delivery and professional installation by our planting team. One price, whole job done.
White Ash - Fraxinus americana
Fraxinus americana is a large deciduous shade tree with a straight central leader and a high, open, oval crown, and it is one of the few ashes that colours purple rather than yellow in autumn. On a park, a school ground or a rural property it makes a genuine avenue tree. On a standard suburban block it will outgrow the space, and the surface roots will find drains and lift paving.
Why White Ash
Autumn Colour: Pinnate foliage turns bronze, maroon and deep purple, which is unusual among shade trees of this size.
Canopy Form: A strong central leader and high branching give clean clearance beneath for parking, seating or turf.
Site Tolerance: It handles cold, wind, heavy soils and urban conditions better than most large deciduous trees.
Scale Warning: This is a big tree. Plan for a crown 8 to 12m across and keep it well clear of buildings, services and boundaries.
Seed Set: Female trees carry heavy crops of winged seed that germinate readily, so avoid planting adjacent to bushland or waterways.
Ideal Applications
Parkland and estate avenue: Repeated at wide spacing along a drive it makes a formal, high canopied approach.
Rural shade tree: A single tree gives substantial summer shade for stock or a homestead yard, then lets winter sun through.
Wide verge streetscape: Suitable only where the verge is broad and services are set well back.
Cold climate windbreak: Planted in rows it filters wind across exposed tableland properties.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a hedging plant, group at 10 to 12m
Spacing (feature/avenue): 12 to 15m
Best Planting Season: Winter, while fully dormant
Soil & Drainage: Deep, moist, well drained loam is ideal; it tolerates clay and moderate alkalinity but performs poorly on shallow sand
Establishment Care: Two deep waterings a week through the first two summers, applied slowly so moisture reaches the full depth of the root ball. Formative prune in winter to maintain a single dominant leader and remove any competing codominant stems while they are still small.
