Black Grevillea (Standard) - Grevillea scortechinii
There are very few genuinely black flowers in horticulture, and this is one of them: dense toothbrush-shaped blooms in near-black purple, carried along the branches through winter and spring. Grevillea scortechinii is naturally a low, spreading plant from the granite country of southeast Queensland and northern New South Wales, so grafted onto a clear stem it forms a weeping head with the flowers hanging at eye level where the colour can actually be appreciated. Against pale gravel, render or sandstone the effect is genuinely unusual.
Why Black Grevillea as a Standard
Flower Colour: Near-black to deep purple-black toothbrush flowers, rare in any garden plant.
Cascading Habit: The prostrate growth weeps once grafted high, bringing the flowers down to viewing height.
Cool-Season Display: Flowers through winter and into spring when little else is working.
Bird Attracting: Honeyeaters feed heavily on the nectar-rich toothbrush racemes.
Frost Hardiness: From granite belt country, so it takes frost better than most grevilleas of this type.
Ideal Applications
Contrast Feature: Placed against a pale wall or light gravel where the dark flowers read clearly.
Native Courtyard: A clear trunk keeps the floor open for low native planting beneath.
Collector's Garden: An unusual grevillea for gardeners who already have the common cultivars.
Large Container: The weeping head is best displayed spilling over the rim of a substantial pot.
Specimen & Installation
Spacing (screening/hedge): Not a hedging form. In a row of standards, 2 to 2.5m between trunks.
Spacing (feature/avenue): 2.5 to 3m for repeated or avenue placement.
Best Planting Season: Autumn or spring.
Soil & Drainage: Free-draining, slightly acidic soil. Mound the planting position on clay and keep the root zone from staying wet through winter.
Establishment Care: Water weekly for the first summer and then only during long dry periods. Retain the stake until the trunk is firm, apply only low-phosphorus native fertiliser, and remove any suckers or trunk shoots below the graft union promptly so the grafted head keeps the plant's energy.
